Welcome!
Monthly Message from Bill Hanbury, President and CEO
July marked my first full year as CEO of United Way of the National Capital Area. In this time, our team has continued our long-standing good work in service to the community. We have improved processes and mobilized new programs to address changing needs. We have laid the groundwork for improvements to our organization, as we continually adapt to the shifting philanthropic landscape and social problems throughout our region.
The workplace campaign has been the cornerstone of United Way's work to improve communities, by channeling resources where they will do the most good. United Way NCA has distributed more than $20 million over the past year in donor designations and our own Community Impact grants, aiding more than 2,700 charities. We improved the grant process by implementing an online application, and this year approved more than 220 grants to support vital programs throughout the region.
United Way today is about more than fundraising, we're about results. Having identified a widespread regional problem, we reached out to community partners for guidance and expertise, and last year we launched Fun, Fly & Fit. Our own youth fitness movement takes on childhood obesity throughout the region, and has already been embraced by schools, childcare centers, and the District of Columbia Departments of Health, and Parks and Recreation.
We have just launched our latest environmental scan to identify the most pressing issues facing the region today, as well as where there are gaps in services around these issues. This assessment will inform our strategic planning and drive our development of new programs and partnerships as we continue to evolve our strategies, while staying true to our longstanding mission...to improve the quality of life for all residents throughout the National Capital Area.
As I move into year two, your United Way – fresh new minds and seasoned veterans – will continue to advance our cause through time-tested activities and new-millennial practices. We'll be investing in optimizing our digital footprint by revamping our Website, enhancing online giving capabilities, and improving electronic communications. Collaboration and partnerships will continue to be a major focus in the next year, as we recognize that only by working together, sharing ideas, and pooling resources can we best serve our community and improve lives.
Thanks to all of you who help us achieve this vision.
Sincerely,
William A. Hanbury
President and CEO
