William A. Hanbury

President & Chief Executive Officer
United Way of the National Capital Area

William A. Hanbury was recently named President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of the National Capital Area.  In his new role, Bill is responsible for:  resource development, community impact, public affairs, marketing and administration of this $36 million organization.  His vision includes better positioning the United Way to be the region’s acknowledged leader in addressing health and human services issues.  His team oriented approach to managing United Way will assure renewed cooperation and partnerships among community stakeholders. 

Before leading United Way, Bill was CEO of Destination DC, Washington’s Convention and Tourism Corporation.  Destination DC is responsible for promoting the Capital Region as a premier tourism and convention destination, as well as for the sales and marketing of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.  Destination DC is responsible for the economic health of the travel and tourism sector, generating nearly 220,000 jobs throughout the region.  

During his tenure, he played defining roles in the region’s economic recovery after 9/11, the dedication of the National World War II Memorial, the return of baseball to DC, the launch of the city’s new brand architecture and the Inauguration of President Barack Obama.  Mr. Hanbury was also President of The American Experience Foundation, a 501(c)3 public charity formed to educate the public about arts, culture and the unique heritage of Washington, DC.

Prior to Destination DC, Hanbury served as President and CEO of the Greater Milwaukee Convention and Visitors Bureau, where he directed the marketing activities for the Midwest Express Center, including the coordination of naming rights for the complex. 

Mr. Hanbury has been an active board member of the following organizations: The Board of Trade, Federal City Council, DC Education Compact, Downtown DC Business Improvement District, and Greater Washington Initiative.  He has also been involved in the arts and cultural community, having served as a board member of the Washington Ballet Company, the Helen Hayes Awards and the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington, DC.  Mr. Hanbury is Immediate Past Chairman of Destination Marketing Association International.  Previously, he served on the NFL Alumni National Board of Directors.

Hanbury is an active cyclist and is a former competitive tri-athlete and cross-country skier.  A graduate of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, Hanbury holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration as well as a Bachelor of Arts from Wilkes University.



Holly Clark Blanchard, CPA, MBA

Holly Clark Blanchard joined UWNCA in July 2006 as the Chief Financial Officer. She brings more than 15 years experience as a senior financial and operational leader, specializing in leading large organizations to reach and exceed their annual targets. Her financial expertise includes business planning, financial reporting, auditing, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting and financial modeling. In December 2008, Ms. Blanchard was the winner of the Washington Business Journal’s Award for Financial Excellence in the non-profit sector.


Since joining UWNCA, she has transformed United Way’s finance department.  Her leadership and Big Four background from Ernst & Young, LLP helped lead the team to complete the fastest UWNCA audit in eight years for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2008. Thanks to her detailed financial training, process re-engineering skills and high professional standards, UWNCA continues to strengthen both financially and as a whole organization.

Ms. Blanchard and the Finance Team have accomplished many critical transformations at UWNCA, including:

  • Led the two best audits in the history of the organization, breaking records in delivery time each year
  • Improved monthly close processes by more than 100%
  • Re-Engineered the agency payout process by 50%
  • Improved the write-in agency process over 1000%
  • Improved collections by 30% in the last two years

Prior to joining UWNCA, Ms. Blanchard worked as the interim Chief Financial Officer for Training Resources Group.  Previously, Ms. Blanchard was a Group Chief Operating Officer with American Management Systems for a $500 million group. 

Ms. Blanchard earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from LeMoyne College and her Masters of Business Administration in Finance, Competitive & Organizational Strategy, and Entrepreneurship from the Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester. She is also a Certified Public Accountant and previously served on the Board of Directors of the Volunteers of America of Western New York as the Strategic Chair.

Ms. Blanchard has been nominated for numerous awards including the Notable American Women and the Washington Business Journal’s Award for Financial Excellence in December 2007.

 

Leslie Whitlow Graves

Senior Vice President,Community Impact

Leslie Whitlow Graves serves as the Senior Vice President of Community Impact for United Way of the National Capital Area (UWNCA), bringing 20 years of experience to this role. Leslie has an extensive history in public policy and not-for-profit engagement on subject matters of concern to the people and communities in the national capital area and the United States at-large. Under Mayor Anthony Williams, she served as Executive Director of Serve DC - the Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism and as the Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the Mayor, Office of External Affairs. Through these positions, Leslie developed skills and established relationships in the business sector, grassroots community and political arena of the national capital area that will enhance the work of UWNCA.

Earlier in her career, Leslie completed certifications at both the National Multicultural Institute and the National Service Leadership Institute; held an appointment with the Governor of California; worked with the federal government to implement a Presidential initiative, and held an appointment with the Mayor of the District of Columbia.

A native of Sacramento California, Leslie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Davis. She is married to a native Washingtonian and has one young son, also a native of Washington, DC.


 

Kerry Morgan

Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications

Kerry Morgan brings more than 20 years of marketing & communications experience in both business and non-profit organizations to United Way. Her recent position as Chief Marketing Officer at Prison Fellowship Ministries has well prepared her for the challenges of a non-profit that is trying to make a difference in the lives of those in need right in our local communities. Prior to seven years at Prison Fellowship, Kerry worked in VP level positions since 1998 in the field of telecommunications where she started her career in 1984. She has received CIO magazine’s 50/50 Award for Best Intranets, a Telly award for a corporate video and two Addy awards for sales promotion materials. Her expertise in strategic brand management and marketing communications have been instrumental in growing brand equity and sales in the small-medium, national and international business segments for the companies she has worked for throughout her career. Kerry lives in Oak Hill, VA with her husband of 23 years Jim Morgan and their 3 children, ages 13, 16 and 19. She is on the Board of Trustees at her church and has a Bachelor of Science, Business Administration from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.
