$200,000 Awarded to DC Schools to Help Kids Live Healthy

WASHINGTON, DC - Wednesday, June 22, 2011, United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA)
will join the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and General Mills to announce this year’s recipients of grant awards worth $200,000 to D.C. public and charter schools.  These grant awards will go to schools that have committed to use the funds to support nutrition and physical activity programming.

Of the 23 schools that applied, 13 schools will be funded this year:
•    Aiton Elementary
•    El Haynes PCS
•    DC Bilingual PCS
•    Kelly Miller Middles School
•    DC Preparatory-Edgewood Campus
•    Eagle Academy PCS
•    Early Childhood Academy
•    SEED School
•    Seaton Elementary
•    Thurgood Marshall
•    Capital City PCS
•    St. Colletta PCS
•    Washington Math & Science

All of these schools have committed to support a healthier lifestyle for local area kids in the 2011-2012 school year.  Grant award recipients will be honored at the annual DC Summer Fun Kickoff Event held at the Columbia Heights Community Center, 1480 Girard Street, NW, DC beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 23. Mayor Gray and United Way NCA President & CEO, Bill Hanbury will be present.

Two of the 2010-2011 recipients, Bruce Monroe Elementary School and DC Bilingual  earned “Gold Level of Distinction” awards from the US Healthier School Challenge; and two of our recipients, Aiton Elementary and Kelly Miller Middle School, earned a “Silver Award.”  United Way NCA, OSSE and General Mills are honored to be able to assist DC Public Schools to make a difference in children’s lives.
