The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and United Way of the National Capital Area teamed up to host more than 850 elementary school students at a field day event on May 7, 2013. “Recess With the Redskins Powered by United Way” was held at the Prince George’s Sport and Learning Complex in Landover, Md. The special event celebrated students’ participation in the first year of our P.E.P. Grant-funded Fun, Fly & Fit program, which encourages kids to eat healthy and stay active.

Hundreds of men and boys attended the Prince George's County Brotherhood Summit held at Bowie State University on Saturday, May 4. Co-hosted by United Way of the National Capital Area and Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela D. Alsobrooks, this star-studded, special event featured Judge Greg Mathis; former NFL All-Pro Brian Westbrook; Kweisi Mfume, former Congressman, Maryland 7th District and NAACP President and CEO; as well as ABC7/WJLA-TV anchor Leon Harris. Created to reduce youth violence in the Prince George’s County community, the Brotherhood Summit was open to boys, ages 13 to 18, and men interested in serving as mentors.

Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on tax reform and charitable contributions. I, along with thirteen state and local United Way CEOS, joined United Way Worldwide CEO Brian Gallagher in providing testimony on the charitable tax deduction and to state the essential role charitable giving has in improving and strengthening communities. During the testimonies, each CEO spoke about their local United Way and how important the charitable deduction is to their individual communities. As the CEO of United Way of the National Capital Area, we serve the District of Columbia and the surrounding suburban communities in Maryland and Virginia. I testified on the social and economic needs occurring in our local community.

On Thursday, February 28, the Washington Business Journal awarded Joe Rigby, Chairman, President and CEO of Pepco Holdings, Inc. with the 2013 Outstanding Directors Award. Joe was recognized for his six years of service on the United Way of the National Capital Area board and for his leadership in turning United Way NCA around to better serve the growing needs of the greater Washington community.

Raise DC, a citywide partnership focused on raising educational outcomes for District youth, released a new Baseline Report Card that highlights five citywide goals aimed at helping children and young adults succeed academically and professionally. The Raise DC Baseline Report Card, underwritten by the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, pinpoints core indicators that will track the city’s progress toward those goals and provides a baseline measurement of the District’s current performance.
In 2011, the Lamb Center, a United Way NCA member nonprofit, provided: 44,725 meals,12,952 showers, 9,531 loads of laundry, 270 AA meetings, 575 job counseling sessions, and more.
The Capital Area Food Bank reports more than 641,000 residents of the Washington region are experiencing or at risk of hunger, including more than 100,000 in Fairfax County alone.
