HOMETOWN HEROES - Nationals, Redskins and United Way. . .Rallying Points for Community Pride

The Washington Nationals had a phenomenal season!  Harper, Laroche, Zimmerman, Strasburg, Werth, Gio and others were unbelievable. But, the most amazing part of watching their success was also seeing the national capital area community come together and rally behind the team. In a region known for partisanship and lack of teamwork, Nats fans pulled together to support the team and were one of the big reasons for their huge success.

The same can be said about Redskin fans. Our community is having a love affair with the team’s new quarterback, RGIII, and his re-energized teammates. I don’t think fans have been more excited since the days of the Super Bowl teams in the 1980s. We still have a lot more excitement in store for us as the season continues.

The same kind of camaraderie and pride exemplified by Nationals and Redskins fans can be used to rally around solving this community’s biggest civic challenges. Unemployment, homelessness, illiteracy, access to healthcare, teen violence, hunger. . .all are very real problems facing thousands of our fellow citizens day-in and day-out. United Way NCA is committed to solving these problems, but we surely can’t accomplish it without your help.

One concrete way of addressing these challenges is by volunteering your time and talents. Volunteering is a great way to get involved and give back to your community. United Way NCA offers volunteer opportunities throughout the national capital area.

Here are some ongoing opportunities that can get you off the sidelines and into the game:

You don’t have to be Bryce Harper smashing a home run, or RGIII hurling a touchdown pass to help build pride in our community. In fact, I think Bryce and Robert would agree that your volunteer efforts and giving back to community are just as important as their heroics on the field.

United Way is here to assist you in accomplishing that goal. By volunteering you join the “big league” effort helping our community and making a lasting impact that will continue long past this season and seasons to come.
