MLK Day health screening a big success

United Way NCA partnered with Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States to host our 2nd annual MLK Day health screening on January 16, 2012.

Over the past two years, the United Way NCA and Kaiser Permanente have helped thousands of people through our health screenings. This MLK day we screened several hundred people at our Maryland and Virginia sites. The services offered included: direct medical screenings, doctor consultations to review test results, and referrals for follow up care. The recent MLK Day Health Screening has been the most thorough conducted to date. We distributed Health Tracking Packets to each participant to record the results of their screenings and to provide educational information related to each screening.  For some patients, these packets represent the first time in their lives they have a personalized Health and Wellness File. This is a huge step towards wellness because many low-income and uninsured residents do not have a primary care physician, have not experience a continuum of care and have had to rely heavily on emergency rooms for medical care.  These health tracking packets, along with referral services for follow-up treatment, now provide newfound continuity and stability in health care for people who need it most.

Many lives were changed that day, but one woman truly received a new outlook on life.

Like many of the patients at the screenings, “Kara” was without medical insurance. She had not received a proper eye examination in years. An ophthalmologist from Kaiser Permanente ran a complete vision screening and provided her with free prescription glasses.  Kara was amazed to see clearly for the first time in a very long time. She was extremely grateful for receiving the much needed services she was provided with.

We’d like to extend a big thank you to Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States, our member agency Annandale Christian Communities for Action (ACCA), and to all the participating doctors, nurses, and volunteers.  This would not have been possible without their level of care and commitment to the broader communities served by United Way NCA.
