UWNCA Supports Hometown Huddle 2009 - So what do you get when you bring together 6 local schools, a star-studded panel of celebrity judges and United Way - Hometown Huddle!

On Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at the Washington Ballet Studio, "THEARC" - United Way Worldwide, United Way of the National Capital Area (UWNCA) and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation held a dance competition.

Bill Hanbury, President and CEO of UWNCA, was the emcee for the event. The NFL and United Way are working together to provide new, fun opportunities for young people to lead healthier lifestyles and this was a great opportunity to showcase that. Childhood obesity is a growing, national health issue and it is affecting kids right here in the nation's capital. The Washington Post reports that 30% of children nationally, 40% of children in the District of Columbia, and 50% of children in DC Wards 7 and 8 are considered overweight and obese.

This was a chance for kids to demonstrate their skills and to enjoy being active. United Way of the National Capital Area is committed to helping kids do this every day in the places where they learn and play, through our child wellness program "Fun, Fly & Fit."

Community Impact Update - United Way Encourages Girls to be Fun, Fly & Fit - What happens when you combine dozens of young girls, a celebrity personal trainer, health experts and United Way?

On September 12-13, the Black Entertainment Television Foundation held its first Girls Health Summit, co-sponsored by United Way. The two-day event was designed to inform girls and young women about the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. More than 100 girls attended the event and many were joined by their parents. Participants attended workshops that covered topics such as: healthy eating, physical activity, domestic violence, healthy relationships, health and skin care and fashion.

Mark Jenkins, celebrity personal trainer and spokesperson for United Way’s child wellness program, Fun, Fly & Fit, hosted two physical fitness sessions (Jenkins

shown in photo at right). O-Water made an in-kind donation and provided healthy beverages for program participants during the workout.

This event also served as a kick-off for Fun, Fly

& Fit. This unique program

encourages children in the greater Washington area to adopt fitness and good nutrition in the places where they learn and play. It brings new momentum to the

fight against childhood obesity, which has reached alarming rates in the region. See more here
