United Way of the National Capital Area's staff is a close knit group of non-profit experts who are making a difference in the Washington, DC, area. We are focused on our mission to better the lives of families and individuals in three areas: Education, Health and Financial Stability.

United Way NCA has new leadership and many of our senior managers and staff are new as well. Our CEO, Bill Hanbury, just celebrated his second full year with us. You can see the energy and dedication at our staff meetings when we all discuss projects we're working on. Spread over three offices, in Vienna, VA, Washington, DC and Silver Spring, MD, we spend a lot of time in the field monitoring the projects we support.

In 2011, the Lamb Center, a United Way NCA member nonprofit, provided: 44,725 meals,12,952 showers, 9,531 loads of laundry, 270 AA meetings, 575 job counseling sessions, and more.

Upon entering first grade, the average middle-class child has spent 1,000 to 1,700 hours of reading time with picture books; a low-income child averages just 25 hours.

Food stamps last an average of 2 1/2 weeks.

By age three, middle-class children have a vocabulary of about 1,100 words compared to 525 words for low-income children.
