Fun, Fly & Fit
United Way NCA Gets School Kids Racing with Fun, Fly & Fit
United Way NCA knows healthy kids are happy and motivated kids.
But far too many elementary school-aged children in our region aren't active and don't eat well. Childhood obesity is a big problem in our region and nationally, more than tripling in the past 30 years. Among 6 to 11 year-olds, it's jumped more than 300% in 20 years.
Budget cuts for school athletic programs have hurt too. Gym is shortened or eliminated in some schools and sports teams have been cut.
United Way NCA has a way to get our kids healthy, active and happy.
Fun, Fly & Fit Involves the Whole Family
United Way NCA's Fun Fly & Fit program is part of the solution.
Imagine jugglers, gymnasts, aerialists, and a professional trainer racing around a school gymnasium showing kids just what the human body can do.
That's how we began to engage elementary school students, their teachers and families in the United Way NCA's Fun, Fly & Fit program launched in the 2010-20111 school year.
Eight elementary schools signed on for the six-week, Fun, Fly & Fit program, which includes 25,000 minutes of activities such as workshops, healthy recipes and take-home tasks designed to involve the entire family.
Fun, Fly & Fit gets students moving activities they can do anywhere including:
- Cardiovascular exercise like running, jumping rope and relay racing
- Team sports like basketball and soccer
- Sheet boat which involves students pulling each other from one end of the gym to another on giant sheets.
- Learning parts of a balanced and healthy diet and organizing meals.
United Way NCA's wellness initiatives also focus on prevention of bullying and youth violence.
Schools receive $1500 worth of fitness equipment and a lot of coaching to get the Fun, Fly & Fit program started. They also have to develop a sustainability program.

Fun, Fly & Fit Works Out in PG County
Students at Potomac Landing Elementary School in Prince George's County embraced the training and made the most of it. By the end of week six they showed:
- A 73% increase in kids who could do 15-20 more jumping jacks
- A 93% increase in kids who could do 10-12 more sit-ups
- A 40% jump in kids who could do 3-5 push-ups
- Weight loss of up to three pounds
- A drop in body mass index.
