Lionel Neptune
Senior Director, Corporate Partnerships and Major Gifts
Lionel Neptune joined United Way in September, 2010 following a 22-year career at the Washington Post, during which he held several senior executive positions, including Vice President of Affiliates and Corporate Relations. In this role, he managed, among other things, the newspaper's charitable contributions process, community outreach programs and public relations initiatives. Mr. Neptune also served as a trustee of the Philip L. Graham Fund from 2001 to 2008, which awarded approximately $5 million in grants annually to area non-profit organizations in the fields of education, the arts, health and human services, and journalism.
Throughout his professional career, Mr. Neptune has demonstrated an abiding commitment to serving his community through volunteerism and philanthropy. These commitments include serving on the boards of Prevent Child Abuse of Metropolitan Washington, the Anthony Bowen YMCA, the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, the African Continuum Theater, Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area, the Helen Hayes Awards, and the Capital Area Food Bank. Mr. Neptune also served on the board of Calvary Women's Services, an organization for which he has volunteered for over 20 years. Additionally, Mr. Neptune has sat on the Board of Visitors for both the Duke University Pratt School of Engineering and Bowie State University. He has also served as a mentor for inner city high school students from the District of Columbia for over 20 years, and was the chair of the Washington Post's United Way campaign for 13 years.
Mr. Neptune earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University and a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard University. He and his family reside in Bowie, Maryland.
