Alex is a 14 year old Nigerian boy. He came to the United States with his mother when he was 8 years old, when his mother married a US citizen. Recently, Alex's mother came to Ayuda desperately seeking help so that her family can continue to live together.
Both Alex and his mother received conditional green cards after she married a US citizen. When Alex’s mother filed a permanent green card application, she incorrectly believed that she could include Alex in her petition. Normally, this would have worked, but due to timing issues and other variables, Alex was required to file his own petition.
As a result, Alex was placed in deportation proceedings before the immigration court - and was at risk of being permanently separated from his family.
Ayuda accepted Alex's case and assisted him, his mother and stepfather in filing the correct petition, which is currently pending. Additionally, Ayuda is providing legal representation to Alex before immigration courts until his petition is approved.
Although Alex's petition is still pending with the immigration authorities, we are confident that Alex will be allowed to remain with his family, and that the outcome will be a positive one.
