Walter joined Back on My Feet in spring 2010 as a resident of La Casa Transitional Rehabilitation Program for homeless adults in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. After leaving an unhealthy relationship, Walter decided to get help in fighting his addictions. One month into the program, and one month since he last used, Walter ran his first mile with Team La Casa. A month after that, he completed his first 5K, which he describes as a spiritual experience.
Walter immersed himself in running, and found peace, comfort, and strength in the physical challenge as well as the community he found in his teammates. Since he began running, he has lost over 40 pounds, obtained his GED, gotten a full time job, reached his one year anniversary of sobriety, and is now living in independent transitional housing. He regularly competes in BoMF races and events, including his most recent accomplishment, tackling the SunTrust National Marathon in March 2011.
Since completing the impressive 26.1 mile trek, Walter had set his eyes on a much longer race: running 100 miles in the BoMF 20in24 Ultra Marathon in Philadelphia, PA this July. Despite the heat, Walter accomplished 67 miles in 24 hours and plans to run the Baltimore Running Festival Marathon in October.
