In the words of Katherine, a National Alliance on Mental Illness Montgomery County staff member:
I consider myself to be very lucky that four years ago NAMI MC had a job opening. From the moment I walked in for my interview I knew that I would love working for NAMI. And I have.
My husband and mother-in-law had both taken Family-to-Family and attended NAMI support groups long before I met my husband. My mother-in-law kept telling me that I should stop by this support group at Montgomery General because it would help me better understand many of my family members.
It wasn't until after I started working at NAMI that I really understood their devotion. They had experienced first hand the power of the NAMI community, a place where people understand why you have to leave work with no notice because your sister is cutting again, you are late to work because you spent the evening getting your spouse to go to the hospital, or your son needs to be taken to a rehab facility 10 hours from home because they have an opening NOW. Before working at NAMI it was that place we always passed while running errands. Now it is a second home.
I started working at NAMI because it fit my interests. I continue to work for NAMI because I leave work everyday knowing that in some way I helped someone. We have a shoe-string budget and fiscally I could make more elsewhere but I don't work for the money. I am as much a volunteer as I am an employee. I teach classes on the weekends and spend much of my free time completing projects outside the office. I am frequently in contact with our community partners at midnight because there are so many people to help and no amount of time in the office could ever provide all the resources needed.
This is an organization about peoples lives and families, about their daily needs, and about the community in which we live. This is an organization with heart. A big heart and we staff members know it. The NAMI MC staff works tirelessly because we are NAMI members. NAMI's mission is our mission. NAMI is our extended family. I have never worked with a group of individuals so dedicated. NAMI is a second home and my extended family and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be involved even in a small way.
