Could You Live On $21 A Week?
UWNCA’s “Food Stamp Challenge”
Could you live on a $21 food allowance for one week? For many families who rely on food stamp benefits, that is a reality. UWNCA’s “Food Stamp Challenge” gives participants a view of what life can be like for millions of low-income Americans.
As UWNCA prepares to launch its Child Wellness Initiative, aimed in part at helping children and their families make affordable and healthy eating choices, UWNCA employees and stakeholders are taking the Food Stamp Challenge to better understand the struggle of low-income households to stretch thin budgets and maintain nutritious, healthy diets.
Join United Way of the National Capital Area as we experience what it's like to live on a $21 food allowance! From May 30, 2008 through June 5, participants will spend a total of $21 per person on food and beverages, shopping at the grocery store of their choice. They will record their receipts and journal their experiences. Challenge participants will have to make difficult food shopping choices, and realize how difficult it is to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods, and stay healthy. The cost of a container of coffee and fresh fruits and vegetables will never be viewed in the same way.
